OH HAI! Are you this “light at the end of the tunnel” I keep hearing about? Will you be my furever home? Are those ADOPTION PAPERS you’re signing? And do they say “Savitar” on them? That’s MY name! (scrunches eyes tight) Please don’t let this be a dream… please don’t let this be a dream…

Savitar’s story:
We pulled Savitar from a kill shelter. His owner surrendered him along with his mate Simi, who is currently in a foster home. He was severely emaciated and showing signs of being abused.
There are a few issues we are currently working on with him. For example, he does not like to be touched on both sides of his head/muzzle. He flinches away from unexpected touch. But Savitar can also be very affectionate. For instance, he can often be found trying to crawl in the lap and lay his head on the shoulder of one of the organization founders.
Savitar is crate-trained, potty-trained, and working on basic obedience. He’s also learning leash manners and experiencing touch therapy to help him understand that not all touch is bad.
Savitar takes a long time to build trust, because the abuse he suffered was terrible. So he needs a home with someone who will be understanding, firm, and not afraid to help him adjust. However, due to his sensitivity to touch, we do not recommend a home with young children.
Savitar’s Diary:
UPDATE – 1/10/19:
Savitar is making great progress during his time at our rescue. He gets along with the dogs at his foster home and does fine with them. However, if he doesn’t know a dog, he can be very confrontational and aggressive. We strongly suggest that he be an only dog unless he is adopted with Simi, who was surrendered at the kill shelter with him. Savitar does great with the kids in his foster home (ages 12-15 years old) but, unless constantly supervised, we feel he needs to be in a home without kids.
UPDATE – 9/25/18:
Savitar is making great strides in his touch therapy. He now tolerates us touching him just about anywhere on his body, so long as we don’t startle him. He’s also learning to get along with the other members of the pack at the rescue, but he still tries to challenge the dominant male, so we still recommend only females in the household or that he be an only dog. He has gained about 15 lbs since we first pulled him from the kill shelter, and doesn’t gobble his food down anymore. He’s starting to understand that not all humans are bad, and there is more food coming. We recommend an experienced rottie person for adoption, because considering all that Savitar has already been through in his life, we want the best for him and to see him blossom.
Savitar is fine with all of the dogs in our pack except our pack leader, who he tries to challenge for dominance. So, for this reason, we strongly suggest he be the only male dog in the household.
Savitar really is a sweet dog, when given the chance. He just needs the right understanding owner to adopt him and to help him learn to trust people again. He enjoys his daily runs with one of the organization founders’ sons (14yrs old), and he loves visiting with the bull we have at our rescue.
